Measuring your Cortisol levels multiple times throughout the day including morning, afternoon, evening, and night is critical because you will be able to effectively pinpoint the exact time of day your cortisol levels are out of balance. Healthy cortisol levels spike up at the time of waking and slowly start to lower throughout the afternoon, evening, and night.

Cortisol is your natural built-in alarm system. It’s your body’s main stress hormone. It works with certain parts of your brain to control your mood, motivation, and fear.

It’s best known for helping fuel your body’s “fight-or-flight” instinct in a crisis, but cortisol plays an important role in a number of things your body does. For example, it:

Manages how your body uses carbohydrates, fats, and proteinsKeeps inflammation downRegulates your blood pressureIncreases your blood sugar (glucose)Controls your sleep/wake cycleBoosts energy so you can handle stress and restores balance afterward

This test is like an arrow at a fork in the road This is a very helpful test. You can have the effects of stressed adrenals, try and treat them but do it wrong and end up worse. I had been taking (on my doctors recommendation, based on a morning blood test) a supplement that increases cortisol. Because of this test, I found out that although my morning cortisol was a little low, the afternoon, evening and night were all high. I had been treating wrong! Unfortunately, high cortisol and low cortisol can have the same symptoms so it can be…

TestCountry made it easy. The instructions and paperwork were straightforward I’ve wondered for a long time whether my cortisol was ‘off schedule.’ Bouts of getting only 1-2 hours sleep, or waking up at 2:30am (like my body had it’s own alarm clock), on top of 20 months of intense stress from dealing with 2 family member’s medical crisis, paired with my full-time job — my body had enough! The doctor indicated I had all the signs of adrenal fatigue. We talked about a cortisol test but he didn’t seem to think it was necessary. I decided to secure the test anyway…

Very helpful I had my thyroid removed and since then, my blood work showed that I was hyperthyroid, but my symptoms indicated hypothyroid. I learned that caffeine can cause cortisol to rise, and rising cortisol can suppress some of the hormones that were causing my blood work and symptoms to be out of sync. The cortisol test indicated that my cortisol in the morning is much higher than what is considered normal. I weaned myself off of caffeine, and the values in my last lab test were in sync with how I…
